Influenza (the flu) is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Some people, such as the elderly, children, and people with certain health conditions, are more susceptible to the flu and more likely to have a severe outcome, such as hospitalization or death. However, most people will experience mild to moderate illness. Preventative treatment is available for the flu via a vaccine. A seasonal vaccine is prepared each year that should protect against influenza viruses likely to be prevalent during that year. During the 2013-2014 flu season, Influenza A (H1N1), influenza A (H3N2), and influenza B are expected to circulate. Other pandemic strains may surface. It is important to treat the flu as complications may arise even in healthy people, such as pneumonia and bronchitis. Infected individuals can infect others one day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Children can infect others for over seven days. Symptoms may take one to four days to appear, thus people can infect others before they know they are sick themselves.
MedLabs Diagnostics, via MedLabs Genetics, presents a comprehensive panel of respiratory viral tests, which includes Influenza A H1, Influenza A H3, and Influenza B. The panel tests for other respiratory pathogens that could cause the same symptoms as the flu including Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) A & B, Parainfluenza 1, 2, & 3, Metapneumovirus, Adenovirus, and Entero-Rhinovirus. The MedLabs Genetics respiratory panel will give you a confident and comprehensive result.
